WPC SIMPLE AND WPC ADVANCED CONCEPTS

FOR WORKPLACE CHARGING (WPC) DESIGN

CHOOSE THE WPC APPROACH THAT WORKS BEST FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION.
REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN ALWAYS UPGRADE LATER FROM SIMPLE TO ADVANCED.
WPC SIMPLE

The WPC Simple concept is developed to give employes an affordable and easy way to provide workplace charging for their employees

LOW COST APPROACH

Non-Networked EVSEs

80% Level 1 and 20% Level 2

EVSEs $400 - $600

No ongoing fees

WPC Simple is designed to keep both the investment and operation costs to minimum by using non-networked “dumb” charging stations (EVSEs) and dedicated parking. Dumb level 1 and Level 2 EVSE’s cost $400-600 and there are no ongoing connection fees.

WPC ADVANCED

The WPC Advance Concept Provides more flexibility and functions for an Employer who is ready to take the next step

HIGHER COST, MORE FUNCTION

Smart Level 2 EVSEs

EVSEs $1000 - $4000

Annual Connectivity fees $100 - $300

Payment fees

WPC Advanced provides more flexibility and functions by using Level 2 smart and networked charging stations (EVSEs). These kind of EVSEs cost $1200-4000 and have annual connectivity fees of $100-300.

WPC SIMPLE

10 level 1 EVSEs (low power, easy pricing)

2 level 2 EVSEs

Future proof with extra conduit and breaker capacity

WPC ADVANCED

50% more charging station than the present number of EV owners at your workplace

Future proof with extra conduit and breaker capacity

INITIAL INSTALLATION

Start by installing 10 Level 1 EVSEs and two level 2 EVSEs. Level 1 EVSEs help to keep the power capacity requirements low and pricing simple. You can also future-proof your installation by running extra conduit to additional parking spots for easy installations at later date.

The number of people shifting to electric is growing rapidly, so if possible install at least 50% more charging stations than the present number of EV owners at your workplace. You can also future-proof your installation by running extra conduit to additional parking spots for easy installations at later date.

LOCATION
WPC SIMPLE

Close to electrical service

Not prime location to keep ICEing down

Dedicated parking

WPC ADVANCED

First come - First serve

Provide enough EVSEs

ICEing: An Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle parking in a EV charging space

Close to electrical Service

These stations should be installed in dedicated parking spots. This way employees don’t have to use valuable work time to move cars around and fee collection is easy. Install the stations as close to the electrical service as possible to keep the installation costs down and preferably a bit further away from the main entrance to reduce potential ICE:ing problems

You won’t necessarily need to have dedicated parking with these stations, but consider the best usage policies. It is still a good practice to have enough stations so employees don’t have to use valuable work time to move cars around. Install the stations as close to the electrical service as possible to keep the installation costs down and preferably a bit further away from the main entrance to reduce potential ICE:ing problems.

Data collection and reporting

EV owner employees provide a vehicle registration plate number and the registration plate number can be marked to the reserved parking sign in front of the parking spot.

If charging spots are shared among EV users, you will simply need to make sure that traditional internal combustion vehicle owners don’t park in those spots and that EV owners actually use the spots for charging.

Smart-charging stations enable digital access control and flexible pricing policies. If these spots are shared between fleet vehicles and the general public, for example, you can set up different charging prices for different users. In general, we recommend pricing the electricity just a little bit higher than home charging energy costs so these stations are used only by those who need to use them. This will increase charging availability, make it more fair and reduce excess demand for new stations. If the system provider handles payments, take into account their payment fees.

When WPC stations are installed in dedicated parking spots, the EV owner is paying both for dedicated parking and for charging. For the sake of simplicity it is recommended to use a flat monthly billing through payroll deduction. For example, amounts could be $20/month for Level 1 charging and $30/month for Level 2 charging. Individual monthly rates can also be set by using the WPC Power and Energy Calculation tool.

You can provide flexibility in the system by installing some public Level 2 stations that would be available for both visitors and employees. These should be installed in a more central location.
If public charging units are installed, they should be priced per kWh so that the electricity is a bit more expensive than what people would pay at home.

Flexibility: Smart stations provide more flexibility, and access control will allow you to provide these stations for employees, fleet, visitors and even for the general public if you so choose.
Data collection and reporting: These stations can collect usage data per user, help you monitor costs and provide reports about usage and even greenhouse gas emission impacts.
Advanced features: These units might be able to keep power capacity constraints by sharing power between stations and keep demand charges at bay with peak demand control.
